Teaching Global Citizenship using social media…and an elephant
Mary Jalland is a primary teacher from Falkirk in Scotland, known mostly from the Twitter accounts of her class elephant Ellie, and cousin Blue Ellie, who travel the world on work experience. Amongst other places around the globe the class elephants have travelled to West Africa to fight Ebola, to Afghanistan to be a soldier, and to the great wall of China as a historian. By following the Twitter accounts the children make a real connection with world issues. Mary is passionate about making global connections through social media to learn about the world with her students to become responsible citizens. Her class were the first #whywedoresearch school Ambassadors, through their online work with medics, and made films for the Save a Life for Scotland campaign to teach CPR to all, for which they won a First Aid Award. Mary uses her class blog as a daily teaching tool, for which she won a local award for use of digital technology. Also an Apple Teacher and Skypeathon fan.
